Official Movie Synopsis
From Academy Award-winning director Brad Bird comes Ray Gunn, a groundbreaking, visually stunning animated sci-fi noir and retro-futuristic detective thriller coming to Netflix. Breaking free from traditional sandbox formulas, Bird crafts a mature, high-concept narrative that blends the classic, shadow-drenched tropes of 1940s hardboiled pulp fiction with a sprawling, breathtakingly imaginative alien metropolis. The film serves as a highly sophisticated celebration of animation as a medium, delivering an intricate, slow-burn mystery that subverts expectations at every turn.
The story follows Raymond Gunn (Sam Rockwell), a world-weary, deeply cynical human private eye operating out of a cluttered, retro-futuristic office under the banner of "Discreet Investigations." In a massive, multi-tiered city where humans and diverse alien lifeforms coexist under an uneasy peace, Gunn scrapes by taking on low-level surveillance jobs and messy domestic cases. His monotonous, unglamorous routine is completely upended when a high-profile, incredibly wealthy client embeds him into a dangerous web of corporate espionage, institutional corruption, and systemic conspiracy that stretches to the highest echelons of the planet's elite.
Thrust out of his comfort zone and into a glamorous, treacherous world of high-society clubs and shadowy back alleys, Gunn must rely entirely on his sharp wits, practical street smarts, and a healthy dose of sarcasm to survive. Featuring an incredible, top-tier vocal ensemble that includes Scarlett Johansson and Tom Waits, the film balances its gorgeous, retro-chic aesthetic with a complex, character-driven narrative. Elevating the sci-fi genre through unparalleled world-building and sharp, razor-thin dialogue, Ray Gunn delivers an exhilarating, masterfully paced cinematic ride that proves that no matter how advanced the technology becomes, the darkest mysteries will always be found in the classic, timeless flaws of human and alien nature alike.
