Official Movie Synopsis
From Academy Award-winning director Peter Farrelly comes I Play Rocky, an inspiring, immersive biographical drama that chronicles the incredible, surreal behind-the-scenes journey behind the creation of the 1976 cinematic classic, Rocky. Evoking the pure, foundational underdog magic of the original film, this stylized narrative pulls back the curtain on a gritty, unglamorous 1970s Hollywood landscape, detailing the immense personal stakes, systemic corporate resistance, and unmatched creative conviction required to bring one of cinema's most legendary fictional heroes to life.
The biographical drama centers squarely on Sylvester Stallone (Anthony Ippolito), a wildly talented but severely struggling actor living on the absolute fringes of the entertainment industry. Paralyzed by near-poverty, facing constant professional rejection, and possessing a partially paralyzed face that studio executives continuously dismiss as unmarketable, Stallone refuses to let go of his cinematic aspirations. When inspiration strikes, he locks himself away to pen a heartfelt script about an unheralded, working-class boxer from Philadelphia who gets a million-to-one shot at the world heavyweight title.
The story rapidly intensifies when major Hollywood film studios recognize the absolute genius of the screenplay and offer a staggering, life-changing sum of money to purchase the rights. However, Stallone introduces an unyielding, seemingly career-ruining ultimatum: he will only sell the script if he is cast as the titular lead actor. What follows is a high-pressure, chaotic battle of wills against powerful studio executives who are determined to cast a bankable, established A-list star instead. Capturing the vulnerable, grounded spirit of a young icon, I Play Rocky delivers a moving, triumphant celebration of creative integrity, documenting the historic gamble that altered the course of film history and proved that the greatest fighters are the ones who refuse to count themselves out.
