Ray Gunn (2026) Movie Synopsis
Set in the sprawling, magnificent mega-city of Metropia—an alternate, retro-futuristic metropolis built on a 1930s architectural blueprint of towering Art Deco skyscrapers and neon-drenched skies—Ray Gunn follows the exploits of Raymond "Ray" Gunn, a cynical, down-on-his-luck gumshoe who holds the distinct title of being the last human private investigator in a fast-moving, high-tech world shared by humans and alien lifeforms alike. Heavily in debt and operating on the margins of a society rapidly outgrowing his vintage detective skillset, Ray’s fortunes seemingly turn when he is hired for a high-profile surveillance gig: following the volatile and temperamental pop music icon and multimedia superstar, Venus Nova.
What begins as a seemingly straightforward domestic tracking case quickly spirals into a dark, labyrinthine conspiracy. When a high-profile murder rocks Metropia, Venus Nova is thrust directly into the center of the crosshairs, and Ray finds himself entangled in a massive web of corruption, alien underworld politics, and sensationalist tabloid media. Forced to navigate a dangerous landscape of flying cars, alien mobsters, and corporate greed, Ray must team up with an eclectic crew, including his trusted alien companion Eye-Ra Kadok, to uncover the truth. As the body count rises and the shadows over Metropia lengthen, Ray must utilize old-school grit and clever instincts to solve the city's most dangerous mystery before his own clock runs out.
Key Cast and Crew Information
This highly anticipated animated feature serves as a long-gestating passion project for filmmaker Brad Bird, who first conceived the concept over thirty years ago. Marrying classic film noir tropes with old-school science fiction adventure—frequently described by Bird as "The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers"—the movie balances an intelligent, mature mystery with stunning visual design.
