Official Movie Synopsis

From Academy Award-winning writer-director Martin McDonagh comes Wild Horse Nine, a razor-sharp, darkly comic political thriller and melancholic character study. Shifting his trademark blend of macabre wit and profound existential dread to a global stage, McDonagh tackles the cynical framework of American foreign policy and the fragility of aging. Set against the volatile, highly charged backdrop of early 1970s South America, the film leverages an incredible ensemble cast to explore the transactional nature of espionage and the unexpected redemptive power of human connection.

The narrative unfolds on the eve of the infamous 1973 Chilean military coup d'état. Chris (John Malkovich), a legendary, ruthless CIA operative credited with executing dozens of high-profile covert missions since World War II, receives a terminal medical diagnosis. Terrified that the dying agent will expose state secrets via a tell-all memoir, panicked CIA bureau chief MJ (Steve Buscemi) dispatches Chris's longtime partner and protégé, Lee (Sam Rockwell), to monitor his final movements under the guise of an island vacation. Together, the eccentric duo travels from Santiago to the extreme isolation of Easter Island (Rapa Nui).

Once embedded among the island's iconic, silent stone Moai statues, the trust between the two veteran partners begins to erode entirely. Paranoia scales to a fever pitch when the cynical, world-weary Chris develops an unexpected, protective friendship with two rebellious leftist college students, Monica (Mariana di Girolamo) and Alicia (Ailín Salas), who are actively working against American interventionism. As political conspiracies tighten and a coup looms back on the mainland, Chris's changing loyalties threaten to push their covert mission off the rails. Striking a masterful balance between hilarious farce, shocking violence, and profound sadness, Wild Horse Nine delivers a brilliant, multi-layered look at morality, regret, and two broken men confronting the final curtain.
