With comic book films all the rage now it’s almost easy to forget that at one time just the idea of an X-men movie was considered unthinkable for Hollywood. A team of superheroes with mutant super powers was considered to silly for audiences and something that would only appeal to the niche comic book crowd.

Credit director Bryan Singer for bringing the franchise to the screen. Singer, an Indie film darling at the time with his critically acclaimed work in The Usual Suspects and Apt Pupil sold the franchise as dramatization of the human rights movement, which was exactly what the original comic books were inspired by. The character of Professor Xavier representing the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King and the character of Magneto representing the early extremist views of Malcolm X.

The result was a huge box office success despite the minimal budget and marketing campaign. The franchise is now six movies strong and counting. The latest film is it’s most ambitious yet, spanning various timelines and utilizing the cast from all six films. Director Bryan Singer has returned to the franchise, promising to tie all the films together. A difficult task considering the lack of through line, and various artistic voices which muddled the storylines from the first two films.

What we see in the first trailer looks impressive, hinting at the spectacle and ambition of the original comic book story of “Days of Future Past”. A beloved story from the X-Men comic books. What we don’t see is the giant robots the Sentinels which help to capture and kill the mutants.

No doubt that will be a major selling point for the film in future marketing campaigns. But what we see so far looks great.

X-Men: Days of Future Past Stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Halle Berry, Anna Pacquin, Ellen Page and Peter Dinklage. The film is directed by Bryan Singer. X-Men: Days of Future Past is scheduled for release May 23, 2014.
