One of the more interesting movies to come out of Sundance this year was Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut DON JON. The film earned buzz from audiences for it’s sensitive and upbeat comedic take on a “Jersey Boy’s” addiction to porn and the bachelor lifestyle. It doesn’t hurt that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is coming off big hits with LOOPER and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Not only is Joseph Gordon-Levitt one of the most popular and successful actors working right now, he is also seemingly one of the most affable performers working as his performances and characters appeal to male and female audiences alike.
Some of the buzz from the movie at Sundance, was concerning the story’s use of hardcore sex footage featured in the initial cut of the film. Some critics questioned how Gordon-Levitt would be able to secure a commercial release with a story that featured pornographic sex in the story. But it seems that Gordon-Levitt will trim some of the more shocking elements of the movie in order to secure a hard R rating. All while staying true to the overall message of the film. The exorcised footage will likely find it’s way back into the film when the film is released for home viewing. The movie also underwent a title change, as the original title was DON JON’S ADDICTION, which is being trimmed town to the more audience friendly title of DON JON.
Based on the trailer, the film is a change of pace for Gordon-Levitt, who seems to be totally immersed in the role. His character features a strong New Jersey accent and he has a vain, muscular physique. It’s easy to see how the film was an audience-pleaser at Sundance, as the clips feature a comedic tone, while displaying the misogynistic yet affable Gordon-Levitt who seems to be the stereotypical teen boy trapped in an adult’s body. Things change for the title character when he starts a relationship with Scarlett Johansson’s character. Based on the clip we see that his character clearly wants and needs to change his lifestyle and personality to advance in life.
The conflict being does he know how?
Despite the dark subject matter, it’s clear this film is going to end up having some heart. The cast is also appealing and likable with Julianne Moore in a featured role and a potential breakout comeback performance for Tony Danza.
DON JON stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Morre, and Tony Danza. The film is written and directed by JOseph Gordon-Levitt. DON JON is scheduled for release October 18, 2013.
Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a strong, handsome, good old-fashioned guy. His buddies call him Don Jon due to his ability to “pull” a different woman every weekend, but even the finest fling doesn’t compare to the bliss he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a bright, beautiful, good old-fashioned girl. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she’s determined to find her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. Wrestling with good old-fashioned expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
