Back in 2004, Vin Diesel was on top of the world. Coming off the success of The Fast and The Furious and xXx he was a bonafide action film star. With his clout at an all-time high, Diesel chose to make a big budget sequel to the surprise hit film PITCH BLACK. THE CHRONICLEs OF RIDDICK was an ambitious film. Part Shakespearean drama, part science fiction tale and part action adventure film THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK was supposed to be the start of another three part space opera. The film was budgeted at a bloated 105,000,000. Needless to say the film had a lot on it’s plate.

Unfortunately, the film didn’t live up to expectations.

Skip to nine years later. With the success of the recent FAST & FURIOUS films, Vin Diesel is now revisiting his early franchise films. First on the list is RIDDICK. Rather than going the route of the ambitious multi-world setting of The Chronicles of Riddick, this third film feels more like the original Pitch Black film. It even has vicious space creatures on the prowl.

I’m not sure that’s a good thing.

My initial reaction upon seeing the trailer is a bit of disappointment. I enjoyed The Chronicles of Riddick and I liked the premise it was setting up. It hinted at an epic multi-arc space tale in the vein of STAR WARS. But this film feels like a reboot. Even a reworked, retelling of PITCH BLACK. Also the look on the film looks HEAVILY reliant on CGI effects. We can practically see the green screens being projected on. I do however, like the casting of Katee Sackhoff and Dave Bautista in the film.

We’ll see how this plays out. If anything RIDDICK will prove to be a huge hit. And they can get back to the original blueprint for THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK storyline. Hollywood needs more new original science fiction films. Let’s hope that RIDDICK can deliver.

RIDDICK stars Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Bokeem Woodbine, and Dave Bautista. The film is written and directed by David Twohy. RIDDICK is scheduled for release September 6, 2013.

Official Synopsis:

Riddick, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000’s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.
