The end of the world is a funny thing. At least that’s what Hollywood would have us believe.
This year features, not one, but two high profile comedies using humanity’s apocalypse as a background. First up, this year we have a comedy film featuring Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Jonah Hill titled THIS IS THE END scheduled for June of this year. Then in August we have Edgar Wright’s latest film Starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost titled THE WORLD’S END.
Yeah… it’s a bit confusing.
THE WORLD’S END features a small group of British, male, friends on a pub run, trying to survive during an Alien apocalypse invasion. While THIS IS THE END features a group of American, male, friends at a celebrity party trying to survive, what appears to be the end of days.
Or… is it… the other way around?
In any event, THE WORLD’S END is the conclusion of an enjoyable creative trilogy featuring actors Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright. The previous films were the critically acclaimed Zombie genre tribute film SHAUN OF THE DEAD and the action film parody HOT FUZZ. Edgar Wright refers to these three films as “The Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy.” If THE WORLD’S END is anything like the first two films we can expect the film to feature lots of visual fun as well as a healthy dose of dark British humor.
THE WORLD’S END stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, David Bradley, Eddie Marsan and Rosamund Pike. The film is written by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright. THE WORLD’s END is directed by Edgar Wright. The film is scheduled for release August 23, 2013.
THE WORLD’S END is the third installment of Edgar Wright’s trilogy of comedies, following the successes Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007). Mr. Wright co-wrote the script with Simon Pegg, who will once again star alongside Nick Frost. Joining the team are actors Martin Freeman (Shaun of the Dead, The Hobbit), Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz, The Bourne Ultimatum), Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes), and Rosamund Pike (Jack Reacher).
20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.
