One of the more intriguing projects of the year is Sofia Coppola’s latest movie THE BLING RING starring Emma Watson. The film chronicles the exploits of a group of celebrity obsessed teens, who robbed the homes of the rich and famous people that they supposedly admired. The subject matter seems tailor made for Sofia Coppola. The theme of female youths living quirky, unconventional lives was explored in her previous films SOMEWHERE, MARIE ANTOINETTE and THE VIRGIN SUICIDES. But more than her other films, THE BLING RING seems to have a wicked sense of humor running through the film, as well as a pointed criticism of the celebrity obsessed media.
From what we can see in the trailer, the proceedings are rightfully treated as almost absurd. It’s especially ridiculous since this group of kids came from privileged backgrounds, and were running amok basically because they were essentially bored. Sure there is a tinge of hipness in the look and feel of the movie. But it also comes off as really shallow, short-sighted, and comedic. Which I think is Coppola’s point. That these kids would claim in a way, they were a victim of the tabloid obsessed culture we live in. But in reality they were seeking stardom through their actions, in their own right. Adding an extra layer of irony is that Bling Ring victim Paris Hilton appears in the film as herself.
So essentially, the willing tabloid headliner, Paris Hilton, landed a role as herself, in a major motion picture because of the criminal actions against her of this group of real-life kids.
So I guess she should send them a residual check… or at the very least say Thank You.
