Elysium – Official Movie Trailer 2013

Elysium onesheet
One of the most anticipated follow ups in recent memory is Neil Blomkamp’s feature film, sophomore effort Elysium. Blomkamp’s previous film District 9 earned critical and commercial acclaim for exploring racial and socio-political inequality issues against an alien, science fiction back-drop.

Based on the trailer, Elysium, is thankfully looking to do more of the same. This time the plot seems to focus on the haves and have nots. Certainly timely especially in light of the recent Occupy Wall Street movement and the current financial climate.

One of the charms of District 9 was that the film came out of nowhere to earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. The movie featured a cast of relative unknowns and the documentary style and humble budget of the piece added to the legitimacy of the themes.

Elysium, however, is a big budget traditional science fiction film. Complete with huge Hollywood stars and top notch special effects. With Blomkamp’s critical success also brings big expectations. It will be interesting to see how the project plays out.

Elysium stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copely, Diego Luna, William Ficthner and Alice Braga. The film is written and Directed by Neil Blomkamp and is scheduled for release August 9, 2013.

Official Synopsis:

In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.
