Giant Monsters vs. Giant Robots.
That’s pretty much the selling point for the Guillermo del Toro film Pacific Rim. It’s a concept so simple one wonders why it took so long to come to fruition. I’m sure when the idea was pitched to the studio they basically saw Transformers vs. Cloverfield…in 3D and in IMAX. I mean just the idea appeals to the 12 year old in all of us.
But for me the real selling point for the film is director Guillermo del Toro. If anyone knows about on screen monsters it’s him. The director of Hellboy 1 & 2 and the critically acclaimed art-house hits Pan’s Labyrinth, Cronos and The Devil’s Backbone, del Toro has always been a favorite of the geek crowd. Although usually associated with his smaller character pieces, he has had the chance to direct big budget films like Blade II and the Hellboy films. But he’s never had the chance to direct an original tale like this and on this scale. It’s certainly something to look forward to in 2013. It’s also especially intriguing since this was the first film del Toro decided to tackle after he walked away from The Hobbit, due to production delays.
Judging from the trailer Pacific Rim looks like a lot of fun. Sure the concept is a little Saturday Morning cartoonish. But there’s nothing wrong with that when it’s this kind of film. My only concern would be how silly does the film get. There’s a tendency to play down to an audience with these kind of spectacle films, often using comedy to offset the fantastical elements at play in the script. My hope is that del Toro will use his better judgement and treat the material with at least a certain level of seriousness and integrity, so that adults, as well as 12 year old kids can find the film entertaining.
Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke, Diego Klattenhoff and Ron Perlman. The film is directed by Guillermo del Toro and is schedule for release July 12, 2013
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
