So who’s the villain?
It’s a question that fans have been asking since the announcement of the sequel of 2009’s Star Trek.
The obvious choice for a villain would be Khan Noonien Singh. Who was played brilliantly by Ricardo Montalban in the episode Space Seed and then later, in arguably the best film in the Star Trek film franchise , Star Trek 2 : The Wrath of Khan.
When Benicio Del Toro was originally being sought for the villain role it led people to believe that J.J. Abrams was leaning toward using the Khan character in the film, since Montalban and Del Toro shared a Latino background. (Even though the character of Khan is of an Indian descent.)
But when Benedict Cumberbatch was cast instead of Del Toro it seemed to be a shift in direction. Than rumors began to circulate that the villain of Star Trek Into Darkness would be Gary Mitchell from the episode Where No Man Has Gone Before. In the episode, the character of Gary Mitchell developed god-like psychic powers due to an alien encounter. His power led to corruption and ultimately a failed attempted to kill Kirk.
But there was no confirmation from the filmmakers. Just more debates and questions.
One would think the first announcement trailer would reveal who the antagonist in the film would be.
Although the trailer is very well made, it reveals hardly anything about the antagonist of the film. The only thing we can discern is that Cumberbatch’s character is a terrorist and is seeking vengeance. One would almost describe him as being wrathful. Which would obviously lean towards the character of Khan. But sharp eyed viewers will notice that Cumberbatch’s character is wearing a Starfleet uniform in some shots.
Which would indicate…that he’s not Khan. So possibly Gary Mitchell? But then… in the Japanese version of the trailer there is an extra bit of information. It’s a tribute shot of Spock reaching out attempting to touch a hand but they are both separated by a see-through barrier. Which is reminiscent of the death scene of Spock in Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan.
So…maybe it is Khan…. Well… we’ll just have to wait and see?
