Lincoln – Official Movie Trailer 2012

Perhaps the most high profile award season movie of 2012 is the Steven Spielberg film LINCOLN starring Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role. The film has all the trademark aspects of an award season film. The film features a historically significant subject matter, intense drama, quotable dialogue and an Academy Award winning pedigree with Spielberg, Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.

The question is…will the film be any good?

Spielberg does tend to go over the top with these type of films. He isn’t afraid to go over-sentimental with the tone, as demonstrated in his last film War Horse. Based on the trailer, LINCOLN certainly looks dramatic. There is some potential for some truly moving moments. The film looks handsome, historically accurate,  and the performances all look solid. But my concern would be whether LINCOLN will come off as a pretentious historical docu-drama, rather than an engrossing character exploration.

Ideally, I’d like to see some of the rough edges of Abraham Lincoln. I’m sure the man was far from being perfect or a saint.  It would be interesting to explore his human side.

Apparently,  a minor controversy has erupted over Daniel Day-Lewis’s interpretation of Lincoln’s voice. I guess people were expecting something more majestic and authoritative?  But according to sources, it’s historically accurate with experts claiming that Lincoln’s voice was described as being in the upper register, even high pitched.

The accent and tone doesn’t bother me one bit. If that’s the biggest issue this film will have, than I’m more than excited to see Daniel Day-Lewis’s interpretation.
