Check out our review of MAN OF STEEL by Lon Harris!
One of the major challenges facing a Superman movie is that the title character is virtually indestructible. Yeah there is Kryptonite. But that is merely a plot device and not a legitimate threat. As far as enemies, Lex Luthor is not physically threatening and General Zod is an insane megalomaniac. Realistically, their fatal flaws can be seen from miles away. Hardly suspenseful stuff in terms of challenging the character of Superman. It seems, judging from the trailer, that the latest film Man Of Steel is acutley aware of the lack of a real, legitimate, threatening antagonist for the character of Superman. Instead, the focus of the film seems to be on Clark Kent’s self discovery and emotional development. In effect, the real antagonist in his life journey is himself, and his own initially, limited views of his own potential, before he becomes the hero we know as Superman.
It’s risky, since this kind of character development may diminish the focus of action and anticipated special effects in the film. But as far as plot, it’s clearly the more interesting story to tell.
Man of Steel stars Henry Cavil, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Chris Merloni, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Shannon and Kevin Costner. Man of Steel is written by Christopher Nolan (Story Idea) and David Goyer (screenplay). The film is directed by Zack Snyder. Man of Steel is scheduled for release June 14, 2013.
In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question ‘Why am I here?’ Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.
