One of the most surprising box office hits of 2008, was the action thriller Taken. The film was first initially released theatrically in Europe, with the movie targeted for a direct-to-video release in the United States. When positive word of mouth spread, the film earned a wide release with distributing handled by 20th Century Fox. Very little was expected from the film, but audiences responded to the plotline of a special forces father rescuing a daughter from sex slavery. The movie went on to earn over 145 million dollars in North America and solidified Liam Neeson’s status as a action film star. With so much success, it’s not surprising that the film has spawned a sequel.
Of course with success comes expectations.
The trailer for Taken 2 looks to be more of the same. With a bigger budget and with the dynamic shifted slightly. I’ll leave it up to the reader to decide if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Judging from the trailer though, it appears that Maggie Grace, who portrayed the kidnapped daughter in the first film, is more front and center in on the action. One can assume that her traumatic experience from the last film has led her to a some sort of formal self defense preparation. No doubt with tutelage from her father. Sure it’s a little far fetched to see a small family, take on team of ruthless organized criminals. But it looks like a lot of fun. And seeing Liam Neeson in bad-ass mode is always an awesome sight. So despite the fanciful premise. Count us in on the adventure.
We’re certainly not gonna be the ones who underestimates the financial potential of this film.
Taken 2 stars Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen and Rade Serbedzija. The film is directed by Olivier Megaton and is written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen. Taken 2 is scheduled for release October 5, 2012.
Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent with a “particular set of skills” who stopped at nothing to save his daughter Kim from kidnappers. When the father of one of the villains Bryan killed swears revenge, and takes Bryan and his wife hostage in Istanbul, Bryan enlists Kim to help them escape. Bryan then employs his unique tactics to get his family to safety and systematically take out the kidnappers, one by one.
