Flight – Movie Trailer 2012

Returning to film screens this winter is critically acclaimed director Robert Zemeckis. His latest film Flight is his first live action film since Cast Away in 2000. After the critically acclaimed Cast Away, Zemeckis released three animated films in a row, The Polar Express in 2004,  Beowulf in 2007, and in 2009 he directed the animated version of the classic holiday film A Christmas Carol.

Although, not typical for an A- list director, it wasn’t seen as unusual that Zemeckis released three animated films in a row. He has always been on the cutting edge of special effects and he seemed fascinated with the motion capture 3D animation technology featured in those three movies.  Even his Academy Award winning film Forrest Gump relied heavily on the clever use of special effects.  At the heart of all  his works however, has always been strong characters. So  it’s not surprising that he has chosen a strong character piece to mark his return to live action movies.

Flight tells the tale of a seemingly heroic pilot, played by Denzel Washington,  who saves a crew and passengers from certain disaster by navigating a safe, crash landing of a plane he is piloting. Initially seen as a hero, his past comes under scrutiny when details of his personal life and the events of the night before are investigated.

Flight features an impressive ensemble cast. Especially exciting is the reunion of Denzel Washington and Don Cheadle, who worked together in the excellent Devil in a Blue Dress. It’s also always great to see Denzel play a blue collar worker character. Nobody does the everyman-in-extraordinary-circumstances thing  like Denzel does.

Based on the trailer this looks like a nice mix of drama and action. The plane crash in particular looks impressive and terrifying.  We all know that Zemeckis can deliver a heart pounding plane crash sequence from his work in Cast Away. With the impressive cast and the directorial vision of Zemeckis, I wouldn’t be surprised if the film garners some award season consideration.

Flight stars Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, John Goodman and Melissa Leo. The film is written by John Gatins and directed by Robert Zemeckis. Flight is scheduled for release November 2, 2012.
