Les Misérables – Movie Trailer 2012

I’m not a musical theatre aficiaonado.

I admire and appreciate the right kind of musical. But as far as naming songs or characters from a musical, I’m completely lost. I have, however, heard of Les Misérables.

Who hasn’t?  Right?

The original source material is the classic Victor Hugo novel, and as far as the actual stage production, it’s arguably the most popular and famous modern musical of our generation. I was aware that a film adaptation was in the works for a long time. But my interest in the project wasn’t peaked until I heard the casting of Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe as Jean Valjean and Javert. I’ve always wanted to see the two Australian superstar actors square off against each other in a project and it looks like we’ll finally get that chance.

Especially intriguing is the prospect of Russell Crowe showcasing his musical talents on the project. It’s a change of pace for Crowe who usually performs in realistic dramas. But I’m not surprised that the man can carry a tune. I was aware that he had his own band titled Russell Crowe & The Ordinary Fear of God.

So I guess I better brush up on the music from this play. With the star power involved and under the direction of Academy Award winning director Tom Hooper, Les Misérables looks to be a movie worthy of Award season consideration. This trailer definitely looks epic in scope and ambition.

Les Misérables stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen. The film is written by William Nicholson, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, Herbert Kretzmer and based on the stage musical by Boublil and Schönberg’s Les Misérables from the novel by Victor Hugo. Les Misérables is directed by Tom Hooper. It is scheduled for release December 14, 2012.

Official Synopsis:

Les Misérables is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Helmed by The King’s Speech’s Academy Award®-winning director, Tom Hooper, the Working Title/Cameron Mackintosh production stars Hugh Jackman, Oscar® winner Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

In December 2012, the world’s longest-running musical brings its power to the big screen in Tom Hooper’s sweeping and spectacular interpretation of Victor Hugo’s epic tale. With international superstars and beloved songs—including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More” and “On My Own”—Les Misérables, the show of shows, is now reborn as the cinematic musical experience of a lifetime.
