Savages 2012 Movie Trailer

Oliver Stone, one of the most celebrated filmmakers in history, returns to the screen with a film adaptation to the Don Winslow novel Savages. The movie also marks a return for Stone to the drug and organized crime film genre. Arguably Oliver Stone’s most famous work is his screenplay for the 80’s crime classic Scarface starring Al Pacino.

Judging from this trailer it appears that Oliver Stone is tapping into his more frantic, drug inspired, visceral visual style which helped define him back in the 90’s with works like The Doors, Natural Born Killers and the under-rated U-Turn.  The change of pace is a welcome transition back from his more recent mainstream friendly films like Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, World Trade Center and W. Especially intriguing is the supporting cast for Savages which features a menacing Salma Hayek, slimy John Travolta and an obviously off-kilter Benicio Del Toro.

Let’s hope this marks a creative comeback for Oliver Stone. There was a time that Stone was considered one of the most talented and inspired directors working in the industry. I, for one, would love to see him return to greatness.

Savages stars Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch Demian Bichi and Benicio Del Toro. Savages is scheduled for release July 06, 2012. The film is written by Shane Salerno, Don Winslow and Oliver Stone. The screenplay is based on the novel by Don Winslow.  Savages is directed by Oliver Stone.

Official Synopsis:

Three-time Oscar®-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone returns to the screen with the ferocious thriller Savages, featuring the all-star ensemble cast of Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch and Demian Bichir. The film is based on Don Winslow’s best-selling crime novel that was named one of The New York Times’ Top 10 Books of 2010. Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Johnson), a peaceful and charitable Buddhist, and his closest friend Chon (Kitsch), a former Navy SEAL and ex-mercenary, run a lucrative, homegrown industry—raising some of the best marijuana ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia (Lively). Life is idyllic in their Southern California town…until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them. When the merciless head of the BC, Elena (Hayek), and her brutal enforcer, Lado (Del Toro), underestimate the unbreakable bond among these three friends, Ben and Chon—with the reluctant, slippery assistance of a dirty DEA agent (Travolta)—wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the cartel. And so begins a series of increasingly vicious ploys and maneuvers in a high stakes, savage battle of wills.
