I’m not big on film’s with so-called mystery plots. Simply because they all tend to be huge let-downs. An example of a mystery plot would be the movie Super 8. For whatever reason J.J. Abrams felt it was unusally important to keep the plot of the film a secret. Well, actually secret wouldn’t be the right word. He encouraged speculation, but would never confirm or deny anything. As a result, the film received extra publicity because audiences were wildly guessing what the film might be. Was it a sequel or prequel to his other secret project Cloverfield? Was it related in some way to Star Trek? Since Steven Spielberg was involved, was the film related in some way to any of his classic 80’s films like The Goonies… or even E.T. Nobody knew. Then the film was released and it ended up being none of those things. It essentially ended up being a coming of age kids film… with a angry alien trying to escape earth.
Needless to say there was disappointment.
The latest mystery film is Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. The project started as a prequel to his classic science fiction film Alien. Now, according to reports the film has transformed into something else. Which might or might not take place in the Alien film franchise universe.
Don’t get me wrong I don’t like spoilers. Which is why we never feature spoilers on this site. And I do believe that less is more…especially for trailers. But when the publicity machine for a film is designed to encourage wild speculation, rarely does that film deliver satisfaction. That’s because our imagination is greater than anything a movie can come up with.
In any event, I am looking forward to Prometheus. Buzz from people who’ve read the script is that it’s amazing and a game changer. I also trust Ridley Scott in the Science Fiction genre. It’s also widely considered one of the most anticipated and biggest films coming in 2012. I’m trying to keep an open mind and just try to go into the film with no expectations.
Hopefully that’ll work.
