Rock of Ages – 2012 Movie Trailer

One of the more intriguing films to be released in 2012 is the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of AgesRock of Ages  is a musical comedy that centers around music from artists of the 80’s including Def Leppard, Journey, Foreigner, Poison, Reo Speedwagon and Twisted Sister. The concept is similar to the musical Mamma Mia, which was a musical comedy that  featured it’s cast singing songs from the 70’s pop group Abba. The Rock of Ages story revolves around the 80’s rock scene on the Sunset Strip. With the cast singing  songs from that period.  It’s an interesting, if lazy ,concept. It’s a way of building on audiences familiarity with the music.

Plenty of the music of the 80’s featured catchy tunes as well as the big haired, androgynous rock stars. The period is obviously ripe for satire and has plenty of comedic posibilities. The most interesting aspect of the film however is the casting of Tom Cruise as the lead singer of the fictional rock band Arsenal. Besides Cruise’s karaoke bar singing in Top Gun, he hasn’t ever had the chance to share his musical talents. Ironically, this trailer barely features Cruise… or even his voice. Being a teaser it’s obviously trying to build some buzz, and the big reveal in the teaser is fun. So in that sense it does it’s job.  I’m not exactly a fan of musicals, but this film has definitely perked my attention. If only for the fun 80’s music. I’m also curious to see how audiences respond to the film. Especially the younger demographic who might not have the same nostalgia I have for the 80’s music sound.

Rock of Ages stars Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Paul Giamattie, Malin Ackerman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bryan Cranston, Alec Baldwin, Diego Boneta and Tom Cruise. Rock of Ages is written by Justin Theroux, Chris D’Arienzo, and Allan Loeb. It is directed by Adam Shankman. Rock of Ages is scheduled for release on June 1st, 2012.
