Is Leonardo DiCaprio the greatest living actor never to win an Academy Award? Seems almost ridiculous that he hasn’t won yet. But it’s true. He’s been nominated several times for many excellent performances. His first time was way back in 1993, for his role in What’s eating Gilbert Grape, when he was 19 years old. He’s now 36. One would think he would have won several by now. Of course we shouldn’t feel too bad for the guy. Every major director in Hollywood either has already worked with him or desperately wants to. He’s hollywood royalty and rightfully considered one of America’s greatest actors with or without an Academy Award. This year he finally had the chance to work with Academy Award Winning director Clint Eastwood in J. Edgar. Will this be the year that DiCaprio wins? Clint Eastwood is an awards season favorite in the industry…so it’s possible.
The trailer for the film looks interesting. J. Edgar Hoover is a fascinating person from history. There shouldn’t be any lacking of drama in the story. I admit that I’m a little thrown by DiCaprio in age make-up. But it should be something that we’ll get over while watching. Biopics though are a tricky deal. Sometimes, if not done right, they can come off as a tv movie of the week. But the film is in the capable hands of Clint Eastwood so that shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Of course the biggest question is whether the film tackles his alleged homosexuality. Some argue that he was and there’s certainly plenty of evidence that he wasn’t. It’s a topic that always seems to follow any discussion about him. We’ll just have to wait and see what the filmmakers choose to present.
J. Edgar is scheduled for release November 11, 2011. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Lea Thompson and Judi Dench. J. Edgar is written by Dustin Lance Black and is produced and directed by Clint Eastwood.
