A FOURTH film? How did we end up here again?
In retrospect, it’s shocking to see the Underworld series of films develop into a full blown franchise. Originally, Underworld was developed as an action re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet …but in the world of Vampires and Werewolves. When a sequel was announced, I personally thought it was excessive and unnecessary. The first film was mediocre at best, but did have some fun action and interesting visuals. But Underworld: Evolution proved to be substantially better than the original, both dramatically and artistically. When Kate Beckinsale decided to leave the franchise, everyone assumed the franchise was dead. Which was fine with me. I liked how the second film ended and was satisfied with that storyline. But the studio, insisting on keeping the film series alive developed an under-rated prequel titled Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.
Which brings us to Underworld Awakening. The return of Kate Beckinsale as Selene. When last we saw Selene, she was the most powerful vampire alive and her mate Michael, a werewolf hybrid was equally powerful. Judging from this trailer it seems like they are pulling an Alien 3 and Bourne Supremacy by essentially wiping the dramatic slate clean and basically starting all over again with a new storyline. Which is disappointing. But as mentioned earlier, the franchise continues to surprise so we’ll see how this franchise evolves.
Underworld Awakening stars Kate Beckingsale, Charles Dance, Michael Ealy, India Eisely , Sandrine Holt and Stephen Rea. The film is directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. Underworld Awakening is scheduled for release January 20, 2012 and will be presented in 3D.
Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.
